Choosing the right perch for your bird is essential. Looking at the types below, I can add that our parakeet will “tolerate” most perches but has an obvious preference for natural wood perches that mimic real tree branches.
We have at least 3 to 4 perches in her cage at any given time. She hops from perch to perch to play with favorite toys or interact with her mirrors. Abundant, well positioned wood perches has kept her active and happy now for years.

Textured perches are touted as “beneficial” for your bird. While there is nothing that says they are not beneficial, our bird has simply never liked or tolerated them. The texture is suppose to help keep nails trim.

Heated Perches for Parakeets
Our parakeet likes a heated perch. However, we found that instead of a heated perch, she likes the “cuddle heater” much better. We purchased the K&H Snuggle-Up Bird Warmer. She absolutely loves it and now we don’t add the heated perch. We simply place the heater by a perch and this is the her preferred setup.
Experimenting with different setups is key to understanding what your bird prefers. Just like humans, they have their own preferences. Ours likes natuaral wood perches better than anything else.
How to Tell What Perch Type Your Parakeet Prefers
That one was easy. We placed 4 types in her cage and rotated them to different positions. We noticed she consistently perched on the same type no matter where we put it. While birds like to be higher rather than lower, the wrong perch will quickly show itself. Our bird does not like “grit” perches or perches with a lot of texture.
